The Andes

Part 2 of our south American adventure:

So i have got a bit distracted and gone slightly off course on our list of things to learn about so as it stands we have covered the Amazon river and rainforest. So in this post i am going to start on the Andes mountain range.

The Andes:

The Andes are the largest continental mountain range in the world as they stretch the length of the west coast of south America. The Andes go through seven countries Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.

The highest peak is Aconcagua reaching a massive 22,841ft the average height for the mountains is 13,000ft. The Andes is split into 3 separate areas North, central and South. There are many Volcanoes that stretch down throughout the Andes as the Andes Volcanoes are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Some of the Andes fall off the continent and make up the Caribbean islands of Aruba and Bonaire.

The climate varies with each different part of the Andes the South is cool and rainy, central is dry and the North is rainy and warm. These can all change depending on the altitude and how close it is to the sea.

The Main exports from the Andes is through agriculture On the mountain slopes terracing is quite common. Two of the mainexports from this farming are the crops potatoes and maize, but tobacco, coffee and cotton are also some of the leading exports.

South American Adventure.

Part 1 of my South American adventure.
South America is located in the southern hemisphere to the west of Africa. It is surrounded by water and I connected to North America through Mexico the oceans surrounding it are the pacific to the west, Atlantic to the east, Carrabin in the north and Scotia sea to the south. The two major geographical features are the Andes and the Amazon basin/river.
In this post we will focus on the Amazon.
The Amazon River:
The source of the Amazon is the lake Lauricocha, in the part of the Andes found in Peru. The river has an average velocity but that increases dramatically at flood times . This therefore puts eight trillion gallons through the mouth of the amazon each day which is 60 times what the Nile does. The annual average output of the amazon is 6,350,000 cubic feet per second.

The Amazon basin;
The amazon basin is 4,195 miles long and covers 2,720,000 square miles including its tributaries. This makes it the largest river basin in the world. The average height above sea level is 300 feet and it is often subjected to heavy flooding during January to February each year. The temperature in the basin averages at 79 degrees and has an average rainfall of 80 inches. The temperature change between night and day is greater than between seasons.
The amazon rainforest is thought to be one of the oldest tropical forests in the world it is estimated to be over 100 million years old. The part of the amazon forest in the river basin is separated into categories of how often it gets flooded. These categories are never, rarely and often. There were 117 different species that have been found in half a square mile. There are also many types of animals and flora but they depend on geographical location, light and the amount of water in the area. The area of most life in the rainforest is the Canopy as it receives the most light and it does not flood.

Introduction

Introduction to my South American Blog
Hello, I am doing my blog on South America because this is a continent I do not know much about. So I have decided to bring you on my learning experience so we can experience a very unique continent together. I hope to shed some light on this continent for the next 5 weeks on the physical geography of the continent but also the geography of its biggest exports so we can find out exactly where it all comes from.
The format of my blog will be first three posts will be on physical geography of the continent:
1 on rivers and mountains,
2 amazon
3 on the countries of South America.
4 will be on where there top 5 imports come from
5 will be where there top 5 exports originate from.
This all may change as time goes on I might combine two or find more things to write about. Thanks for reading and we shall talk soon.
See you next week Conor
